Transarterial Radioembolization
TARE is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat liver tumors, especially unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. It combines embolization and radiation therapy by delivering tiny radioactive beads (Yttrium-90) directly into the tumor’s blood supply. This allows high-dose radiation to target cancer cells while preserving healthy liver tissue. TARE is suitable for patients with inoperable liver cancer and limited spread.
Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) – Uses Y-90 resin or glass microspheres targeted at the tumor.
Segmental or Lobular Approach – Delivers therapy to a liver segment or entire lobe based on tumor location.
Patients undergo imaging (CT/MRI), angiography, and liver function tests to assess tumor size, location, and liver status. A mapping angiogram helps plan the TARE by checking blood vessel structure and possible shunting to lungs or gastrointestinal organs.
