Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) Repair Surgery
Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) Repair Surgery is a procedure to correct a congenital heart defect that consists of four heart abnormalities affecting blood flow. The condition includes ventricular septal defect (VSD), pulmonary stenosis, right ventricular hypertrophy, and an overriding aorta. TOF repair typically involves open-heart surgery, where the VSD is closed, and the narrowed pulmonary valve is widened to improve blood flow.
Complete Repair - the standard surgery involves closing the ventricular septal defect (VSD) and widening the narrowed pulmonary valve or outflow tract to improve oxygenation.
Staged Repair - a two-step process with an initial BT shunt to improve blood flow, followed by a complete repair when the child is stable.
Transannular Patch Repair - a patch is used to widen the severely narrowed pulmonary valve or outflow tract, often leading to pulmonary valve regurgitation.
Pulmonary Valve Sparing Repair - this technique preserves the pulmonary valve while correcting the obstruction, reducing future valve-related complications.
Valve-Sparing Surgery with RVOT Reconstruction - reconstructs the valve and right ventricular outflow tract to improve blood flow without requiring full valve replacement.
Conduit-Based Repairs - a conduit with an integrated valve is placed between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery for complex cases, potentially requiring future replacement.
TOF repair surgery is recommended after diagnostic tests such as echocardiography, electrocardiogram (ECG), chest X-ray, cardiac MRI, and cardiac catheterization confirm the presence of Tetralogy of Fallot. These tests help assess the severity of the defect and guide treatment decisions.
