Prostate Cancer Treatment
Prostate cancer treatment varies based on the stage, aggressiveness, and overall health of the patient. Common options include surgery (radical prostatectomy), radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies. In early-stage cases, active surveillance may be recommended to monitor the cancer before starting treatment.
Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy - This involves the complete removal of the prostate along with the nearby tissues with the help of laparoscopic technique.
Robotic Prostatectomy - This involves the complete removal of the prostate along with the nearby tissues with the help of robotic technique.
Radiation For Prostate Cancer - This involves the delivery of external radiation, usually 25 to 30 sessions, to kill the residual cancer cells. It may be delivered through IMRT or VMAT / RapidArc technique
Brachytherapy For Prostate Cancer - This involves the placement of a radioactive seed inside the prostate to kill cancer cells.
Proton Therapy For Prostate Cancer - This is a highly specialized form of radiation treatment which is administered in the case of advanced prostate cancer.
Immunotherapy - This is an advanced treatment that involves the intravenous administration of medications, usually in the case of recurrent or metastatic prostate cancer.
Targeted Therapy - This is an advanced treatment that involves the intravenous administration of medications that specifically target the cell mutation.
Hormone Therapy - This works by suppressing certain hormones that promote the growth of cancer cells.
Diagnosis begins with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test to check for abnormalities. If results indicate potential cancer, imaging tests like MRI or a prostate biopsy confirm the diagnosis. In some cases, a bone scan or CT scan may be done to check for spread beyond the prostate.
