Pancreatic Cancer Treatment
Pancreatic cancer treatment involves various approaches depending on the stage and severity of the disease. Common treatments include surgery (such as Whipple procedure), chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapies. The treatment plan is personalized based on the tumor’s location, spread, and the patient's overall health.
Whipple's Surgery - This surgery is most often performed to surgically remove the tumor of the head of the pancreas.
Distal Pancreatectomy - This is a minimally invasive surgery involving the removal of some part of the pancreas, including the tail.
Total Pancreatectomy - This procedure involves the complete removal of the pancreas, including the gallbladder, common bile duct, and spleen with some portion of the intestine and stomach and
Radiation Therapy - This involves the delivery of external radiation, usually 25 to 30 sessions, to kill the cancer cells. It may be delivered through IMRT or VMAT / RapidArc technique
Chemotherapy - This involves the use of specific medicines that are given intravenously to systematically target cancer cells.
Proton Therapy - This is a highly specialized form of radiation treatment which uses proton beams to target the cancer cells.
Immunotherapy - This is an advanced treatment that involves the intravenous administration of medicines, usually in the case of recurrent or metastatic cancer.
Targeted Therapy - This is an advanced treatment that involves the intravenous administration of medicines that specifically target the cancer cell mutation.
Pancreatic cancer is diagnosed through a physical exam and medical history review, followed by imaging tests like CT scans, MRI, or endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for detailed views. Blood tests measure tumor markers like CA 19-9, which may be elevated.
