Lung Transplant
Lung transplant surgery is a procedure in which a diseased or failing lung is replaced with a healthy lung from a donor. This surgery is typically recommended for patients with end-stage lung disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, or cystic fibrosis. Lung transplants may involve the replacement of one lung (single lung transplant) or both lungs (double lung transplant), depending on the patient's condition.
Single Lung Transplant - this involves replacing one of the two lungs with a donor lung. It's commonly used for patients with diseases affecting only one lung or when the other lung is relatively healthy.
Double Lung Transplant - this procedure replaces both lungs with donor lungs. It's often used for patients with diseases that affect both lungs, such as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or pulmonary fibrosis.
Lung transplant surgery is often considered when diagnostic exams such as chest X-rays, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), CT scans, and blood gas analysis indicate severe lung dysfunction and the inability to perform normal daily activities despite optimal treatment. If the patient’s lung function deteriorates to a critical level, a lung transplant may be deemed necessary.
