Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an advanced fertility treatment used in cases of male infertility or previous IVF failure. It involves injecting a single healthy sperm directly into a mature egg to aid fertilization. The fertilized egg is then transferred to the uterus. ICSI is commonly used when sperm count or motility is low or when sperm cannot penetrate the egg naturally. It offers higher success rates compared to conventional IVF in select cases.
Conventional ICSI – A single sperm is injected into each mature egg using micromanipulation under a microscope.
Physiological ICSI (PICSI) – Sperm selection is done using hyaluronic acid binding before injection, improving fertilization outcomes in some cases.
ICSI is recommended after tests such as semen analysis, hormonal assays, ultrasound scans, and genetic screening confirm severe male factor infertility or when standard IVF has failed to yield results.
