Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer, often occurring in individuals with chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or cirrhosis. HCC tends to grow quickly and may spread if not treated early. Treatment options depend on the stage and include surgery, liver transplant, ablation, embolization, and targeted therapies.
Surgical Resection – Removal of the tumor and part of the liver if liver function is preserved.
Liver Transplant – Replaces the diseased liver with a healthy one in eligible patients with localized HCC.
HCC is diagnosed through liver function tests, imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI), and tumor markers like AFP. A liver biopsy may be done for confirmation in unclear cases. Screening is essential in high-risk patients with chronic liver disease.
