Dilation & Curettage
Dilation & Curettage is a minor surgical procedure used to remove tissue from the uterus. It is commonly performed to diagnose or treat abnormal uterine bleeding, remove retained products of conception after miscarriage, or investigate uterine conditions. During the procedure, the cervix is dilated and a special instrument is used to scrape or suction the uterine lining. It is typically safe, quick, and done under anesthesia.
Diagnostic D&C – Performed to collect a tissue sample for histopathological examination and assess uterine abnormalities.
Therapeutic D&C – Done to treat specific conditions like incomplete miscarriage, heavy bleeding, or uterine polyps.
A D&C may be advised after pelvic ultrasound, blood tests, and physical examination indicate abnormal uterine bleeding or incomplete miscarriage. In some cases, it follows failed medication-based management or persistent symptoms.
