Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgery to implant a device that sends electrical signals to specific areas of the brain. It is used to treat movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and essential tremor. There are two major types of DBS surgeries- DBS with Rechargeable Battery, and DBS with Non-rechargeable Battery.
DBS with Non-rechargeable Battery- This involves the placement of a pacemaker implant that has to be replaced once the battery life is over.
DBS with Rechargeable Battery- This involves the placement of a pacemaker implant with a battery that can be charged when required.
Deep brain stimulation is often recommended when symptoms worsen or during a diagnostic exam, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT scan), or neurological evaluation.
