Cytoreductive Debulking Surgery
Cytoreductive Debulking Surgery is performed to remove as much of the tumor mass as possible, primarily in cases of ovarian, peritoneal, or advanced abdominal cancers. The goal is to reduce tumor burden, making chemotherapy or other treatments more effective.
Primary Cytoreductive Surgery - Performed at initial diagnosis to remove as much of the tumor as possible.
Interval Cytoreductive Surgery - Conducted after chemotherapy to remove residual disease.
Secondary Cytoreductive Surgery - Performed after cancer recurrence to remove recurrent tumors.
Tertiary or Quaternary Cytoreductive Surgery - Conducted for subsequent cancer recurrences when other options are exhausted.
HIPEC - Combines surgery with heated chemotherapy in the abdominal cavity to kill remaining cancer cells.
Palliative Cytoreductive Surgery - Aimed at alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life in advanced stages.
Cytoreductive surgery is planned after diagnostic tests such as CT scan, MRI, PET scan, blood tests (tumor markers like CA-125), and biopsy. These tests help assess tumor size, location, and spread, aiding in surgical planning and post-operative treatment.
