Bypass Surgery (CABG)
Bypass surgery, also known as Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), is a surgical procedure to restore blood flow to the heart muscle by diverting blood around blocked arteries. It is performed when coronary arteries are severely narrowed or blocked. The surgeon uses a healthy blood vessel from the chest, arm, or leg to create a new path for blood flow. This helps relieve chest pain and prevent heart attacks.
On-Pump CABG – The heart is stopped and a heart-lung machine takes over while the grafting is performed.
Off-Pump CABG – The surgery is done on a beating heart without the use of a heart-lung machine. It is also known as "beating heart" surgery.
CABG is advised after diagnostic tests such as coronary angiography, ECG, echocardiogram, or stress test show multiple blockages that restrict blood flow and cannot be treated effectively with angioplasty or medication.
