Blalock-Taussig (BT) Shunt Surgery
Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunt surgery is a procedure used to improve blood flow in patients with congenital heart defects, particularly in those with conditions like tetralogy of Fallot. The surgery involves creating a connection between the subclavian artery and the pulmonary artery, allowing increased blood flow to the lungs. There are two main types of BT shunt surgery – Classic Blalock-Taussig Shunt, Modified Blalock-Taussig Shunt.
Classic Blalock-Taussig Shunt- this involves directly connecting the subclavian artery to the pulmonary artery without using any prosthetic material.
Modified Blalock-Taussig Shunt- a GoreTex tube graft is used to create a connection between the subclavian artery and the pulmonary artery, which allows for more controlled blood flow.
Blalock-Taussig shunt surgery is often recommended when congenital heart defects are detected during diagnostic exams, such as echocardiography, cardiac MRI, or computed tomography (CT scan).
